In an open letter<\/a> to presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, 26 black leaders and pastors raise concerns about several important topics affecting\u00a0the black community. They discuss violence against black Americans, education, religious liberty, and abortion.<\/p>\n

In the letter, the coalition of leaders, who come from a wide range of organizations and churches, declare their intent to\u00a0serve and protect\u00a0the poor — and all people — which they hold as their Christian duty.<\/p>\n

Following a section on employment and education, in which the coalition argues that\u00a0policies that would\u00a0truly benefit\u00a0poor black Americans are what is needed — not\u00a0politicians simply\u00a0making appearances at black churches — the authors move on to abortion:<\/p>\n

Abortion in the black community has had a catastrophic impact. Nationally there are 365 black babies aborted for every 1,000 that are born. Blacks account for roughly 38% of all abortions in the country though we represent only 13% of the population. In New York City, the situation is absolutely dire. According to a report prepared by the city\u2019s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, in 2013 there were more abortions among black women in the city, 29,007, than there were black babies born, 24,108.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The leaders\u00a0challenge comments made by Hillary Clinton,\u00a0citing a 2015 speech in which Clinton stated (in context of abortion)\u00a0that “deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases have to be changed\u2026\u201d Such comments are “reminiscent of totalitarianism,” argues the coalition.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0candid appeal, the authors\u00a0conclude the section dealing with abortion:<\/p>\n

In 2008, Secretary Clinton, you took the position that abortion should be rare, and you emphasized \u201cby rare I mean rare.\u201d But Black babies are dying at terrifying rates. How do you justify your unconscionable silence in the face of such destruction of innocent black life? Don\u2019t black lives matter? What policies would you pursue as president to reverse the soaring abortion rates among black women?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The questions raised\u00a0in the letter\u00a0are worth considering for all of us.\u00a0Don’t black lives matter? Not to the abortion industry, argue some black activists. Ryan Scott Bomberger, founder\u00a0of the Radiance Foundation, views abortion as “the most institutionalized form of racism<\/a>\u2014population control (aka abortion).” Bomberger finds it disturbing<\/a> that many people\u00a0view abortion, which drastically\u00a0affects the black community, as\u00a0“reproductive justice.”<\/p>\n

Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., shares a similar view of big business abortion and its effects on black individuals and communities. “Please know that Planned Parenthood is not trying to help us as a people,” explains King<\/a>.\u00a0“Not only African-American people, but also all families are at risk from some of the tactics of Planned Parenthood.”<\/i><\/p>\n

Baltimore Ravens tight end Ben Watson<\/a> agrees. \u201cI do know that blacks kind of represent a large portion of the abortions,\u201d he said earlier this year.\u201cAnd I do know that honestly the whole idea with Planned Parenthood and [Margaret] Sanger in the past was to exterminate blacks, and it\u2019s kind of ironic that it\u2019s working.\u201d<\/p>\n
