At Salon, our old pal Amanda Marcotte takes umbrage<\/a> at a recent Slate piece<\/a> by Ruth Graham highlighting the rise of young, female, and secular pro-life activists who confound the stereotype of pro-lifers as old, male, sex-obsessed religious nuts\u2014the very stereotype that happens to be Amanda\u2019s bread<\/a> and butter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fearful that that without a straw man to endlessly tear down she might have to start thinking about and discussing pro-lifers\u2019 actual arguments, Marcotte insists that the movement against abortion \u201cis anything but secular or progressive,\u201d and is still comprised of \u201cthe same old anti-feminist sex scolds they\u2019ve always been\u201d:<\/p>\n

Graham interviewed Destiny Herndon-De La Rosa, who has\u00a0clearly studied<\/a> the hipster feminist aesthetic\u00a0and imitates it pretty well. But when one\u00a0digs past her use of Rosie the Riveter images and her willingness to curse, Herndon-De Le Rosa\u2019s rhetoric is revealed to be\u00a0standard right-wing misogyny. She has called\u00a0feminists \u201chysterical, entitled twats\u201d who \u201care polishing up their victimhood, parading it around and calling it feminism.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But as Herndon-De Le Rosa reveals here<\/a>, those quotes (a) aren\u2019t from her, and (b) are completely misrepresented. They actually come from this article<\/a> on her group\u2019s website, by Kristen Walker Hatten. Further, the first quote actually says (emphasis added) that the founders of true feminism \u201cwent to great lengths to see to it that women were recognized as intelligent people of sound mind who deserved equal rights like property ownership and suffrage, not<\/strong> hysterical, entitled twats,\u201d and the second is referring not to feminists, but to \u201cfauxminists,\u201d extremist advocates for causes like abortion, who espouse \u201cthe opposite of feminism.\u201d<\/p>\n
