The Alabama Department of Public Health has ordered the New Women All Women (NWAW) abortion clinic in Birmingham to close. The clinic has until May 18<sup>th<\/sup> to give up its license and shut its doors.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-Life Nation wrote a <a href=\"http:\/\/myemail.constantcontact.com\/Breaking--Alabama-Abortion-Clinic-Ordered-Closed-By-State.html?soid=1000844617017&amp;aid=SLIklKVEb2M\">press release<\/a> detailing why the NWAW clinic was under investigation to begin with. In late January, two women injured from their abortions (by a drug overdose given by the clinic) were carried out of the clinic to ambulances. The Alabama Department of Public Health discovered \u201c76 pages of deficiencies in nine categories,\u201d based on their own investigation. Yes, that\u2019s <em>76 pages<\/em>. What a stellar place to serve women.<\/p>\n<p>Operation Rescue and CEC for Life both called publicly for Alabama to shut down this clinic, and the Department responded within 24 hours with this order. Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue, reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is such great news on this Good Friday and goes to show what men and women of faith can accomplish when they work together toward a common goal. We congratulate CEC for Life, which worked long and hard to bring an end to the abortion abuses at that notoriously dangerous abortion clinic.\u00a0 This victory represents a major defeat for the abortion cartel. We know lives of women and their babies will be saved because of this.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Clearly, this is a clinic that needed to be shut down. It injured women unnecessarily and killed babies. Nothing about that is amusing whatsoever. But I find great amusement in the vast difference between the headline the Associated Press gave this story and the headline the Alabama Department of Public Health gave their news release.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/hosted2.ap.org\/ALOPE\/723537696d154a99ab358e5f3a7d3bdb\/Article_2012-04-06-Abortion%20Clinic\/id-ce2063e53bbf41939505c194695e1042\">The Associated Press<\/a>: \u201cBirmingham Abortion Clinic Agrees to Close Doors.\u201d Yes, of course. Because this clinic was just so nice and sweet, and they wanted to do whatever they could to comply with others\u2019 wishes. They made an agreement; no big deal; nothing too out of the ordinary here.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adph.org\/news\/assets\/120406.pdf\">The Alabama Department of Public Health<\/a>: \u201cAction taken against license of New Woman All Women Health Care.\u201d Right. Precisely. Because the clinic was actually facing fines and revocations if it didn\u2019t agree to surrender its license. It\u2019s not like the clinic said, \u201cOh, you want us to close because we\u2019re so dangerous to women? Sure, okay. We agree!\u201d Uh, no. They preferred to avoid even bigger trouble and were therefore cornered. They agreed to close based on the action the state would have taken otherwise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To point out another thoroughly amusing (though serious) example of media bias by the AP, all they can write for <a href=\"http:\/\/hosted2.ap.org\/ALOPE\/723537696d154a99ab358e5f3a7d3bdb\/Article_2012-04-06-Abortion%20Clinic\/id-ce2063e53bbf41939505c194695e1042\">this story<\/a> is a mere four paragraphs. The first and fourth are rather introductory or immaterial. The second, as it should be, is about the clinic\u2019s violations:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The clinic was found in a more than 70-page report to have violated numerous rules, including making errors in delivering medication to patients and failing to ensure that staff was properly trained to provide safe patient care.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But the third paragraph comes out of nowhere. Instead of detailing at least a little more information in the 76-page report (don\u2019t you think the public might be interested in this?), the AP decides to change the focus:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A Birmingham police officer was killed in 1998 and a nurse injured in a bombing at the clinic. Olympic Centennial Park bomber Eric Rudolph pleaded guilty to the bombing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Right, because this is so material to the issue at hand. Don\u2019t get me wrong &#8211; a bombing at a clinic is wrong and should be talked about &#8211; but this happened <em>fourteen years ago<\/em>, and <em>we&#8217;re not talking about it right now<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Really, AP, that\u2019s the best you can do? Now, I\u2019m hoping that, later on, the AP will indeed delve into the 76-page report and provide more important information to the public. But I\u2019m guessing that the story will get buried. I\u2019m guessing they\u2019ll continue with their odd word choices like \u201cerrors in delivering medication to patients\u201d instead of \u201coverdosing patients on drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I challenge the AP to rise to the occasion and give the public the information they deserve to hear.
