Living with a terminal illness in Orange, California, her goal is \u201cto do everything I can to have one more second with my kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p><script>(function(d, s, id) {\n  var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];\n  if (d.getElementById(id)) return;\n  js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id;\n  js.src = \"\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.8\";\n  fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);\n}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));<\/script><\/p>\n<p>When assisted suicide legislation was officially passed in California in 2016, Packer experienced the ultimate slap in the face: her insurance company denied the coverage of critical chemotherapy treatment that her doctors recommended for her condition.<\/p>\n<p>Her insurance would, however, cover end-of-life drugs for just $1.20.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was like someone had just hit me in the gut,\u201d said Packer, who shared her story in the new documentary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cbcnetwork\/videos\/10154689870437079\/\">Compassion and Choice Denied<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Produced by the Center for Bioethics and Culture Network, the documentary details Packer\u2019s experience of living with a terminal illness in an age where assisted suicide is cheaper than the fight for life.<\/p>\n<p>Particularly concerning: the insurance company had initially suggested that they would cover the chemotherapy drugs. It was one week after assisted suicide was legalized that they sent Packer a letter saying they were denying coverage. Despite multiple appeals, they continued to refuse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as this law was passed, patients fighting for a longer life end up getting denied treatment, because this will always be the cheapest option\u2026 it\u2019s hard to financially fight,\u201d Packer said in the documentary.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd1\">\n<p><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_by_250_top_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0\" class=\"ArticleAd1a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Physician-assisted suicide is legal in a handful of states, and is on the ballot for voters in Colorado this fall. The push to legalize assisted suicide has gained momentum since the high profile suicide of cancer patient Brittany Maynard in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Many prominent Catholic leaders, such as Pope Francis, have spoken out against assisted suicide, calling it \u201cfalse compassion.\u201d Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez has said that assisted suicide \u201crepresents a failure of solidarity\u201d and abandons the most vulnerable in society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are called as people to support each other, to hold each other\u2019s hand and walk through this journey,\u201d Packer said, adding, \u201cI want my kids to see that dying is a part of life, and the end of your life can be an opportunity to appreciate the things you didn\u2019t appreciate before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Packer leads support groups for individuals with terminal and chronic illnesses. She said there was a clear morale change in many of the group members when physician-assisted suicide became legalized in her state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNormally, we would talk about support and love, and we would be there for each other, and just encourage them that, you know, today is a bad day, tomorrow doesn\u2019t have to be,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>But when assisted suicide was legalized, individuals became more depressed, with some saying that they wanted to end their lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatients are going to die because of this,\u201d Packer said. \u201cPatients need to know what this means, and the public needs to know that it\u2019s going to kill these patients because they aren\u2019t going to get the treatment they need to extend their life.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-video\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cbcnetwork\/videos\/10154689870437079\/\" data-width=\"500\" data-show-text=\"true\">\n<blockquote class=\"fb-xfbml-parse-ignore\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cbcnetwork\/videos\/10154689870437079\/\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cbcnetwork\/videos\/10154689870437079\/\">Compassion and Choice DENIED<\/a>&#8220;Compassion and Choice DENIED&#8221; explores the effects efforts to legalize physician assisted suicide have on those who are living with terminal illness but who do not want \u201caid in dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We are making the full film available free of charge here on Facebook because of how important this issue is.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Posted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cbcnetwork\/\">The Center for Bioethics and Culture Network<\/a> on Monday, October 17, 2016<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>She also said that assisted suicide proponents have twisted the meaning of suicide to make it sound \u201csweet and pretty,\u201d and have also redefined what it means to live with a terminal illness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes terminally ill patients feel \u2018less than,\u2019 that they are not worthy of that fight, that they&#8217;re not worth it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Packer believes that end-of-life drugs should never \u201cbe supported by physicians or run by the government.
