On average, each woman of reproductive age in Vietnam\u00a0undergoes 2.5 abortions.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/m.vietnambreakingnews.com\/2016\/09\/abortion-rate-in-vietnam-highest-in-asia\/\">Vietnam Breaking News<\/a>, doctors at Central Obstetrics Hospital in Hanoi claim that current\u00a0abortion rates are <em>double<\/em> the percentage officially reported by the government.<\/p>\n<p>Vietnamese obstetrician Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong, explains, \u201cVietnam has one of the highest [abortion] rates in the world. It is just sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abortion rates in the country\u00a0are\u00a0especially troubling\u00a0when contrasted with global abortion rates. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/fact-sheet\/induced-abortion-worldwide?gclid=Cj0KEQjwg8i_BRCT9dHt5ZSGi90BEiQAItdjpEvBaFwf9Mf4VBHjwKM0p5pCpq1WMar0q10Oqr4RqjIaAiwj8P8HAQ\">Guttmacher<\/a>, Planned Parenthood&#8217;s former research arm,\u00a0reports that between 2010 and 2014, 25% of pregnancies worldwide ended in abortion &#8211; as contrasted with Vietnam&#8217;s 40%.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd2\"><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_BY_250_mid_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179101244-0\" class=\"ArticleAd2a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179101244-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Out of the 40% of pregnancies ended in abortion, approximately 20% are reportedly\u00a0performed on &#8220;young people.&#8221;\u00a0Nguyen Thi Hoai Duc, director of the Institute for Reproductive and Family Health, says approximately\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/e.vnexpress.net\/news\/news\/abortion-rate-in-vietnam-highest-in-asia-3476746.html\">70 percent<\/a>\u00a0of secret abortions in Vietnam\u00a0are performed on\u00a0young women\u00a0between the ages of 13 and 19.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many girls\u00a0<span id=\"IL_AD3\" class=\"IL_AD\">visit<\/span>\u00a0clinics three\u00a0[or] four times to have abortions even though they have greater access to contraception and they are already aware of the risks of abortion,\u201d said Duc.<\/p>\n<p>Vietnam Breaking News reports that the shame of out of wedlock pregnancy plays a large role:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In Vietnam, premarital sex remains a taboo. A young woman who gets pregnant out of wedlock is likely to face harsh backlash from society and family. As a consequence, unmarried women have to turn to private clinics to have an abortion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Employees of Ho Chi Minh City&#8217;s Tu Du Hospital, the largest obstetrics hospital in southern Vietnam, said abortion numbers are on the rise.
