A proposed\u00a0bill<\/a> banning nearly all abortions\u00a0is set to\u00a0be debated by\u00a0Poland’s Parliament this week. Abortion is already\u00a0prohibited\u00a0in Poland, except in the cases of rape or incest, life or health of the mother, and severe fetal deformities. However, Life News reports<\/a> that under the nation’s current law, babies with Down syndrome and other disabilities have been legally aborted. The proposed legislation would\u00a0prohibit all abortions, except when the mother’s life is at risk.<\/p>\n

New Europe reports:<\/a><\/p>\n

Mariusz Dzier\u017cawski, the\u00a0head of Poland\u2019s Stop Abortion committee, said 58% of Poles backed the proposed new law, adding that it was necessary because \u201cabout 1,000 unborn children are legally killed in Poland each year\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cBeing suspected of having Down\u2019s syndrome is enough to be killed. It must change. We do not fear abortion supporters as they are weak and there are few of them. The pro-life movement is much stronger in our country. We will force the politicians to ban killing people.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The proposed\u00a0ban would reportedly make abortion a criminal offense, punishable by up to five years imprisonment.\u00a0Penalties could be imposed on both abortionists and women seeking abortions.<\/p>\n

While many\u00a0pro-lifers\u00a0may agree with most of the ban’s provisions, many would\u00a0object to\u00a0the state taking legal action against women seeking abortions. In many cases, abortion-vulnerable women may\u00a0feel that they have no other options<\/a>, or are pressured<\/a>, even coerced<\/a> into having abortions.\u00a0Many pro-lifers believe that women in such\u00a0circumstances\u00a0should be offered help and healing –\u00a0not punishment.<\/p>\n

Amnesty International has urged the government to reject the abortion ban, while Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo\u00a0has indicated support for the measure.<\/p>\n

An opposing bill, which would legalize abortion-on-demand up to 12\u00a0weeks of pregnancy, will also be considered by Parliament. According to Radio Poland<\/a>, the abortion ban has garnered roughly 450,000 signatures, while the pro-abortion measure\u00a0gathered over 215,000,<\/p>\n
