{"id":126225,"date":"2016-09-15T16:16:49","date_gmt":"2016-09-15T20:16:49","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=126225"},"modified":"2016-09-15T16:16:49","modified_gmt":"2016-09-15T20:16:49","slug":"sacramento-bee-cant-deny-planned-parenthood-wrong-blames-pro-lifers-anyway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/sacramento-bee-cant-deny-planned-parenthood-wrong-blames-pro-lifers-anyway\/","title":{"rendered":"Sacramento Bee can&#8217;t deny Planned Parenthood is wrong, blames pro-lifers anyway"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>This summer, Live Action News covered <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-bill-targeting-free-speech-opposed-california-media\/\">California legislation proposed by abortion advocates and backed by Planned Parenthood<\/a> that would criminalize the recording and publishing of conversations with health care providers, an obvious attempt to shield the abortion industry from the sort of undercover investigative work that <a href=\"\/news\/amanda-marcotte-packs-a-year-of-baby-parts-lies-into-a-single-diatribe\/\">exposed Planned Parenthood&#8217;s harvesting and sale of aborted babies&#8217; organs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This week, the <em>Sacramento Bee<\/em> editorial board joined a long list of abortion-friendly groups\u2014including the California Newspaper Publishers Association, California Broadcasters, Motion Picture Association, and the <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-backed-bill-to-prevent-secret-recordings-advances-in-california\/\">ACLU<\/a>\u2014who have opposed AB 1671 as an overly-broad infringement on free speech. But despite calling on California\u2019s Democrat Governor Jerry Brown to veto the bill, the paper did everything it could to convey that pro-lifers are still the <em>real<\/em> bad guys.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd1\">\n<p><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_by_250_top_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0\" class=\"ArticleAd1a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>First, the good (which is conveniently saved for the end of the editorial so as not to make pro-aborts look <em>too<\/em> bad):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Why, for example, should health care providers get special protections? The bill would apply whether they were taped talking about privileged health records or the weather. And what would constitute a provider? This bill seems to cover not just doctors and chiropractors but their lobbyists.<\/p>\n<p>Would the Democrats who dominate state lawmaking have been as open to creating a new crime had this bill arisen from, say, a video sting of a gun-manufacturing operation?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Good question. Sadly, it\u2019s undermined by the rest of the piece\u2019s efforts to cast the Center for Medical Progress\u2019s undercover investigation as illegitimate, pointless, malicious, and even dangerous. Consider the editorial\u2019s ludicrous opening statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s a hazard of this social media and cellphone era that anything you say might end up being secretly recorded and used online against you. That\u2019s what happened last year to Planned Parenthood, with not only political consequences but collateral violence and loss of life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_67511\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67511\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-67511 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/deborahnucatolaz-e1437510387131-300x178.jpg\" alt=\"deborahnucatolaz-e1437510387131\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/deborahnucatolaz-e1437510387131-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/deborahnucatolaz-e1437510387131.jpg 340w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-67511\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Deborah Nucatola<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Yes, because who among us hasn\u2019t <a href=\"\/news\/a-guide-to-how-planned-parenthood-is-breaking-the-law\/\">broken a string of federal laws<\/a> to make money off of children we\u2019ve killed? Aren\u2019t we all equally likely to admit to baby organ trafficking if our private conversations are recorded at random? Those are the implications of the <em>SacBee<\/em> editors\u2019 \u201canything you say,\u201d \u201cwhat happened to\u201d rhetoric, as if Planned Parenthood could possibly have fallen into this mess through no fault of their own.<\/p>\n<p>It may be a clich\u00e9, but in this case it really is applicable: this sort of thing just doesn\u2019t \u201chappen to\u201d people with nothing to hide.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The video smear by anti-abortion activists involved undercover videos purporting to show Planned Parenthood illegally trafficking in fetal tissue. Planned Parenthood was doing no such thing, of course, and was cleared of wrongdoing, but not before millions of people saw and heard the recordings.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_67457\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67457\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-67457 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/negotiations-gatter-300x166.png\" alt=\"negotiations gatter\" width=\"300\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/negotiations-gatter-300x166.png 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/negotiations-gatter-700x388.png 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/negotiations-gatter-672x372.png 672w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/negotiations-gatter.png 852w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-67457\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mary Gatter<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Doing no such thing? It is <a href=\"\/news\/comprehensive-guide-media-matters-lies-spin-behalf-planned-parenthood\/\">undisputed<\/a> that Deborah Nucatola said on tape that some Planned Parenthood affiliates wanted to \u201cdo a little better than break even,\u201d Mary Gatter negotiated prices because \u201cit has to be big enough that it is worthwhile,\u201d and StemExpress flyers advertised the \u201cfinancially profitable\u201d nature of partnering with them on fetal organ procurement. The only comments in the videos PP\u2019s apologists point to as exonerating them are nothing more than PP officials talking about not wanting to be <em>perceived as<\/em> breaking the law; they do nothing to explain away the plain meaning of their own words. (And no, the videos <a href=\"\/news\/forensic-analysis-finds-full-planned-parenthood-videos-authentic\/\">were not edited<\/a> to make anyone appear to say something they didn\u2019t.)<\/p>\n<p>Nor was Planned Parenthood \u201ccleared.\u201d Some state investigations have turned up empty-handed in states where PP <em>was never accused of having an organ-transfer program<\/em> <em>in the first place<\/em>. But most of the CMP footage was taken in California (you know, the <em>Sacramento Bee\u2019s<\/em> home state)\u2014and California <em>never opened an investigation into the charges<\/em>. So declaring PP cleared based on a review that doesn\u2019t even include the case\u2019s Ground Zero is like declaring a murder suspect innocent because you searched his whole house except for the locked room with boarded-up windows that the really bad smell is coming from.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and the federal Justice Department, the body with the most power to turn up wrongdoing, hasn\u2019t bothered to investigate either, and the investigation by Congress\u2019s Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives is ongoing\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A court order eventually stopped their distribution on an activist\u2019s website.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Because the guilty wanted to <a href=\"\/news\/law-firm-defending-stemexpress-requests-removal-case\/\">suppress evidence of their lawbreaking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>California outlaws the taping of private conversations without permission from all parties, but not their distribution. Planned Parenthood has been trying this year to change that, not only because the videos prompted numerous efforts to defund the abortion provider but because they sparked a wave of threats and clinic attacks that eventually killed three people and injured nine others.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd2\"><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_BY_250_mid_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179101244-0\" class=\"ArticleAd2a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179101244-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Of course: <a href=\"\/news\/larry-wilmore-reporting-planned-parenthood-facts-inciting-violence\/\">accurately reporting Planned Parenthood\u2019s activities makes one culpable<\/a> for people reacting badly to true information (never mind <a href=\"\/news\/violence-against-abortionists-extremely-rare-despite-claims\/\">how peaceful 99.99999999% of pro-lifers are or how rare actual anti-abortion violence is<\/a>); by that logic nobody should ever raise awareness of any scandal or crime with any potential to stir intense emotions.<\/p>\n<p>The Colorado Planned Parenthood shooter, Robert Lewis Dear, was a <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-shooter-not-prolife\/\">mentally-disturbed man with a history of apolitical violence<\/a>, making it a stretch to argue covering Planned Parenthood\u2019s crimes made him do it. But for a moment, let\u2019s assume he was of sound mind; how would that put blood on CMP\u2019s hands? There are <a href=\"http:\/\/listverse.com\/2014\/01\/30\/10-controversial-cases-of-vigilantism\/\">numerous<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/obituaries\/la-me-nesler30-2008dec30-story.html\">cases<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hlntv.com\/article\/2014\/06\/11\/maynor-jay-shoot-kill-daughter-molestor\">of people<\/a> who have snapped and murdered killers, rapists, muggers, etc. By <em>SacBee\u2019s <\/em>logic, merely informing people of heinous crimes would automatically make any media outlet or police department culpable for these vigilantes\u2019 actions.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the pro-abortion media for you: even when they can\u2019t deny that abortion advocates are in the wrong, the real story is that it\u2019s all pro-lifers\u2019
