{"id":125665,"date":"2016-09-08T13:52:09","date_gmt":"2016-09-08T17:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=125665"},"modified":"2016-09-08T16:33:34","modified_gmt":"2016-09-08T20:33:34","slug":"ohio-ag-receives-signatures-on-pro-life-constitutional-amendment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ohio-ag-receives-signatures-on-pro-life-constitutional-amendment\/","title":{"rendered":"Ohio measure would define a preborn child as a person and ban abortions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Petition signatures <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/open\/index.ssf\/2016\/09\/proposal_would_brand_abortion.html\">have been submitted<\/a> to the office of Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine demanding a ballot initiative on amending the state constitution to completely ban abortion in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The petitions call for language that would &#8220;prohibit abortion of all unborn human beings, without exception, and classify it as aggravated murder in the state of Ohio.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To preempt common objections to personhood legislation, the amendment&#8217;s language would also make clear that it did not apply to non-abortifacient contraception, in-vitro fertilization, or procedures and treatments that function prior to fertilization.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd1\"><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_by_250_top_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0\" class=\"ArticleAd1a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov\/getattachment\/b4780179-de5a-4aaa-ab6e-e47c77658769\/To-criminalize-the-killing-known-as-%E2%80%98abortion-%E2%80%99-o.aspx\">draft submitted<\/a> to the AG&#8217;s office does not specify whether the punishment for &#8220;aggravated murder&#8221; would be limited to abortionists or also apply to women who seek abortions, but &#8220;whoever violates this section is guilty&#8221; seems to suggest that both could potentially be prosecuted.<\/p>\n<p>Now begins a review process in which the number of signatures will be tallied to ensure there are enough valid, non-duplicate signatures to qualify for the ballot, as well as to ensure the proposed summary of the amendment to be placed on the ballot accurately describes it.<\/p>\n<p>Should the Ohio Constitution be amended to end abortion in the state, it would potentially be subject to a lawsuit on the grounds that it violates the so-called &#8220;right to choose&#8221; imposed at the federal level by the US Supreme Court in <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>.
