Fortunately, there\u2019s more to discuss.<\/p>\n<p>First, we have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/stories\/sandra-fluke-a-fake-victim-of-georgetowns-policy-on-contraceptives\/\">some investigative work<\/a> by Mytheos Holt at the<em> Blaze<\/em>, who found a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/ezra-klein\/post\/meet-sandra-fluke-the-woman-you-didnt-hear-at-congress-contraceptives-hearing\/2012\/02\/16\/gIQAJh57HR_blog.html\"><em>Washington Post<\/em> story<\/a> which suggests Fluke not only knew Georgetown didn\u2019t cover birth control for students, but decided to enroll there specifically so she could make it a <em>cause c\u00e9l\u00e8bre\u00a0<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Fluke came to Georgetown University interested in contraceptive coverage: She researched the Jesuit college\u2019s health plans for students before enrolling, and found that birth control was not included. \u201cI decided I was absolutely not willing to compromise the quality of my education in exchange for my health care,\u201d says Fluke, who has spent the past three years lobbying the administration to change its policy on the issue. The issue got the university president\u2019s office last spring, where Georgetown declined to change its policy.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, Sandra Fluke is no mild-mannered student blindsided by prudish administrators, but a radical who always intended to transform Georgetown\u2019s values through any means necessary. The powers that be didn\u2019t cave in to her demands after three years, so she chose to try her luck at imposing her will through the force of law.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, that raises the question of why she didn\u2019t make any headway. If students are really suffering the way she describes, wouldn\u2019t it only be a matter of time before the pressure of complaining and transferring students compelled Georgetown to give in on its own?<\/p>\n<p>Another Georgetown student, Angela Morabito, <a href=\"http:\/\/thecollegeconservative.com\/2012\/03\/02\/sandra-fluke-does-not-speak-for-me\/\">has the answer<\/a>\u2014Fluke\u2019s classmates just don\u2019t care:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>A student group called <a href=\"http:\/\/planahoyas.blogspot.com\/2010\/03\/recap-weekend-actions.html\">Plan A H*yas for Choice<\/a> staged a demonstration against the university health plan last year, duct taping their mouths and chaining themselves to the statue of Georgetown\u2019s founder on the university\u2019s front lawn. Then, a funny thing happened \u2013 nothing. We left them there.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If that\u2019s accurate, then it would seem Georgetown\u2019s health plan works just fine for most students, who either took the time to learn about the plan before attending or took it for granted that they\u2019d have little need for birth control at a religious school. Contrary to Fluke\u2019s indignant refusal to \u201ccompromise,\u201d researching everything a school offers and asks of its students is a basic step of the college experience (especially when spending <a href=\"http:\/\/thecollegeconservative.com\/2012\/03\/02\/sandra-fluke-does-not-speak-for-me\/\">over $23,000<\/a> on an education), and there\u2019s no such thing as a decision without trade-offs. For instance, I chose my alma mater, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillsdale.edu\/\">Hillsdale College<\/a>, for the excellence of the faculty and curriculum, but I went in knowing that it was also more expensive and further from home than several of my alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of building a case for Congress to liberate Georgetown students from the crushing burden of having to make informed decisions, the Sandra Fluke saga has merely underscored the need for college students, who are supposed to be in the final stages of the transition to independent adulthood, to take financial and sexual responsibility for their own lives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Judging by the explosive reaction to last week&#8217;s post about 30-year-old Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke\u2019s congressional testimony on contraceptive coverage, it seems lots of people want to talk about the story.
