Nancy Pelosi has inadvertently done the pro-life cause a favor. On Monday the House Minority Leader held a congressional hearing on the cost of birth control, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/81959142\/Testimony-Sandra-Fluke\">the testimony<\/a> of her witness, Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke, put the narcissism and disingenuousness of her cause on full display:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Without insurance coverage, contraception can cost a woman over $3,000 during law school. For a lot of students who, like me, are on public interest scholarships, that\u2019s practically an entire summer\u2019s salary. Forty percent of female students at Georgetown Law report struggling financially as a result of this policy. One told us of how embarrassed and powerless she felt when she was standing at the pharmacy counter, learning for the first time that contraception wasn\u2019t covered, and had to walk away because she couldn\u2019t afford it. Students like her have no choice but to go without contraception.<!--more--><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Craig Bannister at CNSNews.com <a href=\"http:\/\/cnsnews.com\/blog\/craig-bannister\/sex-crazed-co-eds-going-broke-buying-birth-control-student-tells-pelosi-hearing\">did the math<\/a> and found that \u201cAt a dollar a condom if she shops at CVS pharmacy\u2019s website, that $3,000 would buy her 3,000 condoms \u2013 or, 1,000 a year.\u201d Divide 1,000 by 365, and it seems Ms. Fluke wants us to believe Georgetown girls are \u201chaving sex 2.74 times a day, every day, for three straight years.\u201d Considering that my friends and I (male and female alike) managed to survive four years of college without having <em>any<\/em> sex, I don\u2019t think the Georgetown kids cutting down a little is too much to ask.<\/p>\n<p>Further, the <em>Weekly Standard\u2019s<\/em> John McCormack <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/blogs\/dc-target-sells-birth-control-9-month-georgetown-student-tells-congress-friends-are-going-broke-pay-pills_632955.html?nopager=1\">notes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Birth control pills can be purchased for as low as $9 per month at a pharmacy near Georgetown&#8217;s campus. According to an employee at the pharmacy in Washington, D.C.&#8217;s Target store, the pharmacy sells\u00a0birth control pills&#8211;the generic versions of Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Ortho-Cyclen&#8211;for $9 per month.\u00a0&#8220;That&#8217;s the price without insurance,&#8221; the Target employee said.\u00a0Nine dollars is less than the price of two beers at a Georgetown<\/em> <em>bar.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>$9 x 12 months = a mere $108 per year. Ms. Fluke\u2019s recreational preference is more than affordable, and let\u2019s be clear that that\u2019s exactly what it is\u2014<em>her<\/em> personal choice to prioritize something that she probably (I can\u2019t find confirmation whether or not she\u2019s married) shouldn\u2019t even be doing in the first place, according not to me or Congress but <em>according to her own belief system and the values of the college she voluntarily attends<\/em>. (Oh, and since she\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/pils\/scholars.htm\">a recipient<\/a> of Georgetown\u2019s Public Interest Law Scholarship, Georgetown might already be paying for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/pils\/BenefitsandObligationsofPILS.htm\">up to a third of her annual tuition<\/a>, in addition to that summer stipend.)<\/p>\n<p>But wait, Sandra Fluke counters, this isn\u2019t <em>just<\/em> about sex\u2014lots of women need contraception pills for other medical reasons. Georgetown technically covers such prescriptions, but:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In sixty-five percent of cases, our female students were interrogated by insurance representatives and university medical staff about why they need these prescriptions and whether they\u2019re lying about their symptoms.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, how dare Georgetown attempt to verify the legitimacy of requests for a service that could so easily be used for entirely different purposes!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>For my friend, and 20% of women in her situation, she never got the insurance company to cover her prescription, despite verification of her illness from her doctor. Her claim was denied repeatedly on the assumption that she really wanted the birth control to prevent pregnancy. She\u2019s gay, so clearly polycystic ovarian syndrome was a much more urgent concern than accidental pregnancy.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Assuming she\u2019s telling the truth, Georgetown may very well be in the wrong. Perhaps the school should show greater deference to \u201cwomen and their doctors\u201d rather than \u201cuniversity administrators or other employers.\u201d But that\u2019s neither a justification to get the federal government involved nor to forcibly change Georgetown\u2019s policy on birth control for casual use. Her quarrel is with Georgetown University, not Congress.<\/p>\n<p>If Sandra Fluke\u2019s numbers are accurate, that wouldn\u2019t indicate contraception is a necessity. Quite the opposite\u2014it would suggest that Georgetown University has been consumed by a sex-obsessed culture that doesn\u2019t even try to subordinate personal gratification to higher virtues like self-control, chastity, or personal responsibility. Nancy Pelosi\u2019s star witness has unwittingly illustrated one of the stakes in the ObamaCare contraception battle that\u2019s been lost amidst the talk of religious liberty and government power: the moral caliber of the young people we\u2019re relying on to become the responsible adults of the next generation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pro-abortion, anti-liberty zealot Rep.
