{"id":1076,"date":"2010-06-07T16:37:51","date_gmt":"2010-06-07T21:37:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/blog\/?p=1076"},"modified":"2013-03-29T05:51:10","modified_gmt":"2013-03-29T09:51:10","slug":"the-importance-of-non-violence-in-the-pro-life-cause","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/the-importance-of-non-violence-in-the-pro-life-cause\/","title":{"rendered":"The importance of non-violence in the pro-life cause"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Recently, there has been a lot of talk about the anniversary of the terrible murder of Dr. Tiller.\u00a0 This event was a horrible tragedy, no doubt as painful to truly pro-life individuals as the death of a single unborn child.\u00a0 If we value all life, than surely Dr. Tiller\u2019s life is valuable as well.\u00a0 Though he was guilty of horrific deeds, it is never right to take another human being\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>Tiller\u2019s murderer no doubt thought that he was helping the pro-life cause by eliminating one of its most infamous opponents.\u00a0 However, this act set the pro-life movement back by providing the media with yet another depiction of the entire movement based on one misguided individual.\u00a0 The anniversary of the murder does, however, provide us with an opportunity to remember why non-violence is so important in the pro-life movement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/mlk.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1085\" title=\"mlk\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/mlk.jpg\" width=\"494\" height=\"359\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIn his essay \u201cThe Ways of Meeting Oppression,\u201d\u00a0 Dr. Martin Luther King lays out the three most common ways of responding to an injustice in the world.\u00a0 The first is to resign to the fact that nothing is going to change.\u00a0 With the pervasiveness of the pro-abortion opinion in the media, this can be a tempting fiction.\u00a0 Sometimes it seems, thanks to the mainstream media, that everyone in the world is pro-abortion, so what is the point of fighting for life?\u00a0 King reminds us that \u201cnoncooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as is cooperation with good.\u201d\u00a0 The members of the pro-life community need to take inspiration from their leaders and peers and continue to fight for justice.<\/p>\n<p>The second way to meet oppression, relevant to our earlier discussion, is solving injustice through violent means.\u00a0 The argument for this sort of method is usually a mathematical one.\u00a0 If we can harm one abortionist, we save thousands of babies.\u00a0 Obviously there are major flaws in this line of thinking, beyond the simple fact that every life is invaluable.\u00a0 For one, the abortionist will often simply be replaced by others.\u00a0 Secondly, and more importantly, the person who takes a life states, through action, that sometimes the means of taking a life are justified by some other end.\u00a0 You will recognize the same argument in our opposition.\u00a0 King points out that violence \u201cthrives on anger, not on love,\u201d and that \u201cit creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers.\u201d\u00a0 Violence harms the perpetrator as well as the victim.<\/p>\n<p>The third way, and the way that King advocated throughout his life, is nonviolent resistance.\u00a0 This is the true heart of the pro-life movement.\u00a0 This is the prayer vigils outside of clinics.\u00a0 This is the rational discussions with pro-abortion individuals who eventually change their minds.\u00a0 King\u2019s discussion about the struggle between the races is relevant to members of the pro-life movement, as well.\u00a0 I will leave you with his words: \u201cIn the end, it is not a struggle between people at all, but a tension between justice and injustice.\u00a0 Nonviolent resistance is not aimed against oppressors but against oppression.\u00a0 Under its banner consciences\u2026are enlisted.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, there has been a lot of talk about the anniversary of the terrible murder of Dr. Tiller.\u00a0 This event was a horrible tragedy, no doubt as painful to truly pro-life individuals as the death of a single unborn child.\u00a0 If we value all life, than surely Dr. Tiller\u2019s life is valuable as well.\u00a0 Though [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":19,"featured_media":1085,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"om_disable_all_campaigns":false},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.7 -
